LATEST TREND

Eco

What trend these days doesn't come with an avalanche of eco-examples? Check out what Volkswagen, Fiat, Garmin, HP and others came up with to assist customers in greening their behavior (and sometimes saving some money in the process, too):

  • Created by Fiat, eco:Drive is an application that can be downloaded to USB and transferred to a vehicle's onboard computer, aiming to improve driving efficiency by measuring the driver's ability to drive in an eco-friendly manner. The software evaluates the user's driving style and gives a mark out of 100. Online tutorials subsequently encourage drivers to improve their score, and ultimately reduce their carbon emissions.

  • In March 2009, Galp Energia launched Galpshare, a carpooling platform available throughout Portugal, where commuters can create a profile, specify their daily route and find others heading the same way. Users can also list their musical preferences and interests, helping them find people they'd enjoy sharing a ride with.
  • In 2009, Garmin developed ecoRoute, a downloadable program that determines a route's eco-friendliness. Users can download the free ecoRoute software update from the Garmin website, and it will determine the environmental cost of a future trip, allowing informed decisions to be made about whether it is better value to take a car or public transport.
  • Chevrolet teamed up with the 2010 SXSW festival to offer the Chevy Volt Recharge Lounge where visitors could enjoy refreshments and recharge their electronic devices. The brand also offered a 'Catch a Chevy' service, which offered festival-goers lifts around Austin.

Strategic Thinking Tip

Scan the External Environment.
In today's rapidly changing world, it is critical for people and organizations to constantly scan the external environment to see what is changing that might affect their decisions.
One framework for this is called the SKEPTIC, which scans eight areas: socio-demographics (people), Competition, Economics, Ecology (green applications), Political/Regulatory, Technology, Industry/Suppliers, and Customers. Not all areas will apply to every business or organization, but most will.
We recommend conducting this external trend review at least once a year at the start of the planning horizon. Depending on your industry and marketplace, it may be necessary to do this quarterly.
At least annually, try to estimate changes that might occur three to five years in the future. Many websites have projections which will be useful for this purpose. Follow that up with periodic scans throughout the year of current changes that could affect how you do business and the strategies you're employing to drive the organization forward.
This is a useful exercise for your personal life, too. A framework you might use is PITO: Personal (mind, body, spirit), Interpersonal (family, friends, colleagues), Team (associations, communities, departments), Organization (job, career, wealth, enjoyment, satisfaction).

Best Practice of the Month

The Primary Job of Leaders
is Planning and Change
Leaders at all levels have two jobs in this fast-moving world. Not only must they focus on their daily duties and responsibilities, but they must constantly be aware of changes in the external environment that could affect the decisions and actions they're taking today.
To do this requires that you are working both ON the enterprise (staying abreast of external changes) and IN the enterprise (analyzing and taking actions to move the organization towards its ultimate desired state). A Systems Thinking Approach helps leaders maintain this dual focus

Social Media Tips

Tip No. 2: Know Your Target Market
Take the time up front to determine who your ideal customer is, where they live and work, what products and services interest them, and what social media tools they use.
Firms such as Forrester Research and Claritas have a wealth of secondary research data you can access which will give you a pretty comprehensive picture of your ideal customer(s).
Additionally, if you have the budget, it's wise to survey your customers directly to gain additional insights into their wants and needs.
Depending on your particular products and services, you may find that Facebook isn't where your customers hang out. Knowing how and when they communicate is critical to helping you design the right social media strategies to reach them.
